# CPAP Cost Check

Rent, buy or use insurance. See what each one costs you over the months you need it.

A CPAP can cost you three very different amounts. Renting with cash costs little up front. Buying costs more on day one and less over time. Going through insurance depends on your deductible, your share after it, and the 13 month rental most plans use. Put in your own numbers below.

## How the Math Works

**Renting** is the monthly rent times the months, plus any one time fee. If the rent does not include supplies, the tool adds your monthly supply cost.

**Buying** is the machine price plus a mask, plus supplies every month.

**Insurance** adds up what the plan allows for the machine and supplies. You pay all of it until your deductible is met, then your coinsurance share of the rest. The plan rents the machine for 13 months, then you own it and only supplies go on. A deductible starts over each year, so a long stretch can cost a little more than shown.

## Common Questions

### How much does a CPAP cost without insurance?

A new auto CPAP costs about $849 to $1,054 to buy. Renting costs about $30 to $60 a month. Add a mask and supplies either way. Put your own numbers in the tool above to see which costs less for you.

### What is the 13 month rule for CPAP?

Medicare and many plans rent the machine for you for 13 months in a row. After the 13th payment you own it. You pay your share each month, so if you stop early you pay less but you do not keep the machine.

### What does Medicare pay for a CPAP?

In 2026 you pay the first $283 of Part B costs for the year. After that Medicare pays 80 percent of the approved amount and you pay 20 percent. Medicare keeps paying only if you use the machine enough in the first three months.

### Is it cheaper to rent or buy a CPAP?

Renting is cheaper for the first few years. At the prices we found, buying wins after about 29 to 34 months. If you are new to CPAP, renting first lets you find out if it works for you.

### Does this tool tell me if I need a CPAP?

No. It only does the math on cost. Only a clinician who has seen your sleep study can say if you need a CPAP and what settings to use.

NightWells publishes information, not medical advice. This tool does math on cost only. It does not diagnose anything or say if you need a CPAP. A CPAP needs a prescription, and the settings should come from a clinician who has seen your sleep study. Your plan’s own numbers win over anything here.
