# Renting a CPAP Without Insurance

## The Short Answer

You can rent a CPAP with no insurance for about **$30 to $60 a month**. That buys the machine. Most plans leave out the mask, and some make you buy a supply plan on top. Count both and a cash rental usually lands near **$40 to $60 a month**.

You still need a prescription. Renting beats buying if you need the machine for less than about **two and a half years**. After that, buying a new one costs less. Run your own numbers.

## What Renting a CPAP Costs, Company by Company

Here is what each company that rents to cash payers says on its own site. Nobody paid to be on this list. They are in order of the monthly price they advertise.

Two things jump out. The cheapest headline price is not always the cheapest month, because of what it leaves out. And most rentals are older models like the ResMed AirSense 10, not the newest AirSense 11. That is fine for most people. The pressure and the comfort are close. Just know what you are getting.

## The Real Monthly Price Includes Supplies

A CPAP is a machine, a hose and a mask. The machine is the part you rent. The parts that touch your face wear out, and you pay for them on top.

A cushion gets stiff and leaks. A filter turns gray. A hose cracks. If they are not replaced, the mask leaks and therapy stops working. Then people quit, and the machine was money thrown away. ## Rent or Buy

Renting costs less up front. Buying costs less over time. The question is how long you will need it, and for most people with sleep apnea the honest answer is years.

Total paid over time. Renting is The CPAP Box machine plus its supply plan at $55.98 a month. Buying is the machine price plus the same $26 a month of supplies.

Here is how to read it. At $55.98 a month, renting passes the price of a new AirSense 11 plus its supplies at about **month 34**. Against a Luna G3 at $849, it passes at about **month 29**. Before that, renting wins. After that, buying wins every month.

Rent first if any of these are true.

Buy if you have used CPAP for a few months, it works, and you plan to keep using it. Many people rent for three to six months to be sure, then buy.

## What a New Machine Costs to Buy

Most of these are auto CPAPs. An auto machine adjusts its pressure through the night, so it often needs less fine tuning than a fixed one. Your prescription says which type you need.

## You Need a Prescription Either Way

A CPAP is a prescription device under federal rules. Every company above asks for one before it ships, whether you rent or buy. The prescription lists your machine type and pressure settings.

No insurance does not mean no prescription. It means you pay for the steps yourself.

1. **Get a sleep test.** A home sleep test is the cheapest route, often about $150 to $500 cash. A night in a lab often runs $1,000 or more. 2. **Have it read.** A sleep doctor reads the result and diagnoses you. Many home test companies include this in the price.
3. **Get the prescription.** The doctor writes it with your settings. Ask for a copy you can send to any supplier.
4. **Send it to the rental company.** Most take email or fax. Then they ship.

## How to Rent a CPAP, Step by Step

1. **Have your prescription ready.** A photo or PDF is usually fine.
2. **Price the full month.** Machine, supplies and mask together, plus any setup fee and deposit.
3. **Ask which machine you will get.** Model and age. Ask if it was cleaned and checked, and if it has a heated humidifier.
4. **Pick a mask you can sleep in.** Nasal pillows, nasal or full face. This matters more than the machine. If one is not comfortable, ask to swap it.
5. **Read the exit terms.** How you cancel, who pays return shipping, and what they charge if it is lost or damaged.
6. **Use it every night.** The first two weeks are the hardest. Most comfort problems have a fix, so call the supplier before you give up.

## Ten Questions to Ask Before You Pay

- What is the total each month, with everything I need to use it?
- Is there a setup fee or a deposit, and is the deposit refunded?
- Is a mask included? If not, what does one cost?
- Which model is it, and how old?
- Does it have a heated humidifier?
- Can any of my rent go toward buying it?
- What do you charge if it is damaged or lost? Some charge up to 80 percent of a new one.
- How do I cancel, and who pays to ship it back?
- Do you take HSA or FSA cards?
- Can I see my nightly use data, and can my doctor?

Your use data matters. It shows if the mask leaks and how many events you still have. Your doctor needs it to fine tune your settings.

## Rental, Rent to Own and Medicare’s 13 Months

These three get mixed up a lot.

**A plain rental** means you pay each month and never own it. The CPAP Box works this way. Stop paying, send it back, and you are done.

**Rent to own** means some of what you pay counts toward buying it. CPAP Ninja applies rent toward a purchase, up to half of retail. Ask how much counts and for how long.

**Medicare’s capped rental** is the version insurance uses. Medicare covers a 12 week trial, then pays a supplier to rent the machine for 13 months. After that you own it. You pay 20 percent after the Part B deductible. Many private plans copy this.

Medicare keeps paying only if you use the machine at least 4 hours a night on 70 percent of nights in a 30 day stretch during the first three months. But the same 4 hours is a fair goal for your own health.

## Paying With an HSA or FSA

The IRS lets you pay for medical equipment and supplies from an HSA or FSA. A CPAP and its supplies are generally treated as eligible. The CPAP Box says you may use HSA funds. CPAP Ninja says it does not accept HSA or FSA cards, so you would pay and then claim it back.

A limited purpose FSA, the kind that covers only dental and vision, usually will not cover it. Check with your plan before you count on it.

## Renting a CPAP for a Trip

Forgot your machine, or going somewhere for a few weeks? Short rentals exist but are thin on the ground. CPAP Ninja has a one month minimum. CPAP Supply USA rents for 35 days. Some city rental services bring medical gear to a hotel for a delivery fee.

If you travel often, a travel CPAP may be worth owning. The ResMed AirMini sells for about $919. Insurance rarely pays for a second machine, so this is usually cash either way.

## Why Not Just Buy a Used One

It is tempting. Used machines show up online for a few hundred dollars. Here is why to slow down.

- A CPAP is a prescription device, and federal rules limit who may sell one. A private sale sits in a gray area at best.
- You do not know how it was used, cleaned or stored, or how many hours it has run.
- It may be set for someone else’s pressure, and changing it should follow your own prescription.
- It may be a recalled machine.

On that last point, Philips recalled millions of CPAP and BiPAP machines in June 2021 over foam that could break down. In April 2024 a court order limited Philips from selling new machines in the United States until it meets set conditions. If a used Philips machine is offered to you, look up its serial number on the Philips recall site first.

A rental from a supplier gets around all of this. The machine is cleaned, checked and set to your prescription.

## If You Cannot Afford Any of This

Do not just go without. Untreated sleep apnea raises the risk of high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems and car crashes. Try these first.

- Ask the sleep clinic for its cash price and a payment plan. Many offer both and few advertise them.
- Look for a community health center. They charge on a sliding scale based on income.
- Rent the cheapest complete setup while you save to buy.
- Ask your doctor if an [oral appliance from a dentist](https://nightwells.com/blog/sleep-apnea-mouthpieces-and-dentists/) could work for you. For mild to moderate apnea it is a real option.
