# Mouth Tape for Sleep Apnea Is a CPAP Helper, Not a Cure

1. Mouth tape is not a proven sleep apnea treatment. A 2025 review found 10 studies with 213 patients, and only 2 showed better apnea scores.
2. The best result came from 20 mouth breathers with mild sleep apnea. Their median apnea score fell from 8.3 to 4.7 events an hour after one week of taping.
3. It did not work for everyone. In a study of 71 people, about half saw no oxygen gain, and people with severe apnea leaked air out the sides of the tape more often.
4. A blocked nose is the danger. A 2026 review tied nose blockage to about 14 more breathing events an hour.
5. The strongest new use is with CPAP. In a 2025 trial, mouth breathers on CPAP used their machine 52 more minutes a night with tape on.

This page is general information. It is not medical advice. Talk to your doctor before you tape your mouth at night, and never use tape in place of a treatment your doctor prescribed. If you wake up gasping, choking or short of breath, call your doctor. For severe trouble breathing, call 911.

Social media sells mouth tape as a cheap fix for sleep apnea. The research says something smaller. A 2025 review of every study it could find counted 10 trials with 213 patients in all, and only 2 showed a real drop in apnea scores. 1 The same review warned of a serious risk for people who tape without checking their nose first.

We wrote this for anyone who has seen the videos and wants to know if tape could replace a CPAP, or help one. You’ll find what each study measured, who it helped, who it didn’t and the one place it looks useful.

## What Every Mouth Tape Study Found

The research on taping is small. Most studies tested a few dozen people for a night or a week. The table lists the ones that measured sleep apnea, newest first.

| Study | Who was tested | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| OTO Open review, 2026 4 | Pooled studies of blocked noses, plus 2 tape studies | A blocked nose added about 13.8 breathing events an hour. The 2 tape studies were too few to pool |
| Sleep medicine trial, 2025 5 | 62 mouth breathers on CPAP, most with severe apnea | CPAP use rose 51.8 minutes a day with tape, 30 days each way |
| PLOS ONE review, 2025 1 | 10 studies, 213 patients | 2 studies showed better apnea or oxygen scores. Others found no change |
| Scoping review, 2025 6 | 9 studies | One apnea gain with tape alone, one with tape plus a dental device |
| Nature and Science of Sleep, 2023 3 | 71 adults, one night normal, one night taped | About half saw no oxygen gain. Severe cases leaked air out the sides of the tape more |
| Healthcare, 2022 2 | 20 mouth breathers with mild apnea | Median apnea score fell from 8.3 to 4.7 an hour. Snoring fell by about half |

Notice who was in these studies. The 2025 review found many of them left out anyone with a blocked nose or nose problems. 1 So the good results come from people who were checked first. That is not the same as taping at home after a video.

### Can you use mouth tape if you have sleep apnea?

Only with your doctor’s okay, and only if your nose is clear. Sleep apnea means your airway already closes at night. A sleep doctor at CU Anschutz says blocking airflow can harm people whose airway is already narrow, and that people with diagnosed sleep apnea should avoid taping. 8 Houston Methodist puts sleep apnea on its list of people who should not tape. 7

## Who Saw Results, and Who Did Not

The 2022 study is the one you see quoted. It tested 20 adults who breathed through their mouths and had mild sleep apnea. Each person did a home sleep test, then a second test a week later with silicone tape over the lips. 2

- 13 of the 20 people, or 65%, cut their snoring by half or more.
- The median apnea score fell 47%, from 8.3 to 4.7 events an hour.
- Lying on the back, the score fell from 9.4 to 5.5.
- The lowest oxygen level rose from 82.5% to 87%.

That is a real result. A score of 4.7 sits just under 5, the lowest score Medicare uses for CPAP coverage. 11 But the study was small, had no control group and lasted one week.

The 2023 study is the warning. It taped 71 people for one night and tracked air leaking out the mouth, called mouth puffing. 3 About half of them saw no gain in oxygen drops. Leaks came and went in 33.8% of the night for severe cases, against 14.6% for mild cases. The worse the apnea, the more the tape failed to hold the air in.

### Does mouth taping make sleep apnea worse?

It can, when your nose is blocked. A 2026 review pooled studies where the nose was blocked on purpose or packed after surgery. Breathing events rose by about 13.8 an hour, and oxygen drops rose by about 7.5 an hour. 4 Taping your mouth shut during a cold or allergy flare puts you in that same spot. The 2025 review names choking, or asphyxiation, as a possible harm when the nose is blocked. 1

## Is mouth tape better than CPAP?

No. No study has put tape up against CPAP for moderate or severe sleep apnea. The best tape result moved mild patients from a score of 8.3 to 4.7. 2 Medicare covers CPAP at a score of 15 or more, or 5 to 14 with symptoms like daytime sleepiness. 11 Tape alone was never tested at those higher scores.

Tape looks much better as a CPAP helper. A 2025 trial in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine gave 62 people silicone tape to wear with their CPAP. 5 All of them breathed through their mouths on the machine. Their average apnea score was 45.8, which is severe. Each person spent 30 days with tape and 30 days without.

| Measure | Change with tape |
|---|---|
| CPAP use, all days | 51.8 more minutes a day |
| CPAP use, nights it was worn | 41.4 more minutes a night |
| Nights the machine was used | 14.2% more |
| Nights of 4 hours or more | 17.6% more |
| Odds of good use | 4.5 times higher |

Sleepiness, snoring, dry mouth and night waking all got better too. The study also says side effects happened, so it was not free of problems. 5 A doctor team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital wrote up a similar case in 2025, a patient with severe sleep apnea whose sleep was less broken up with tape added to CPAP. 10

Why would tape help a CPAP? With a nose mask or nasal pillows, air pushed in through the nose can rush out an open mouth. The pressure drops and your mouth dries out. A full face mask already covers the mouth, so tape has no job there. If your machine’s report shows high leak and you wake with a dry mouth, ask your sleep doctor about tape, a chin strap or a full face mask. Using CPAP at least 4 hours a night is the usual goal, and our [4 hour rule guide](https://nightwells.com/blog/cpap-4-hour-rule/) explains why.

## A Safety Check Before You Tape

If your doctor is fine with you trying tape, go through this list first. Any no on this list means skip it.

1. Do you know your sleep apnea score? Snoring with gasps, choking or daytime sleepiness needs a sleep test first. Our [sleep apnea risk check](https://nightwells.com/tools/risk-check/) takes two minutes.
2. Can you breathe through your nose for 10 minutes with your mouth closed, awake and lying down?
3. Is your nose free of a cold, allergy flare, polyps or a known bent septum?
4. Are you free of reflux, heart or lung disease and asthma? Houston Methodist lists each of these as a reason not to tape. 7
5. Did you skip alcohol and sleeping pills tonight?

Houston Methodist also says to use a small strip of hypoallergenic tape across the middle of closed lips. Never use duct tape or other sticky tape that blocks air. 7 Leave the corners of your mouth open. If you feel panic or wake up pulling at it, stop.

Better first steps exist for mouth breathing. Treat the allergy or the stuffy nose. Try nose strips or saline spray. Sleep on your side, and our [pillow trick guide](https://nightwells.com/blog/pillow-trick-for-sleep-apnea/) shows how. For mild apnea, a dentist made mouthpiece has far more research behind it. See [sleep apnea mouthpieces and the dentists who make them](https://nightwells.com/blog/sleep-apnea-mouthpieces-and-dentists/).

### Why is mouth tape all over social media?

Because selling it pays. A 2026 study looked at 390 Instagram reels tagged mouth tape. 9 Of those, 94.4% said it works. Companies made 55.4% of them, and medical workers made just 11.6%. Reels in favor got shared about 923 times on average, against 193 for reels against it. Houston Methodist calls mouth taping a billion dollar industry. 7

## Myths to Drop

### Mouth tape can replace a CPAP

No trial has shown that. The best result was in mild apnea, in 20 people, for one week. 2 If your score is moderate or severe, tape is not a treatment.

### If it stops snoring, the apnea is gone

Snoring and apnea are not the same thing. In the 71 person study, about half got no oxygen gain while taped. 3 Quieter is not the same as breathing better. Only a sleep test can tell. Our guide to [snoring or sleep apnea](https://nightwells.com/blog/snoring-or-sleep-apnea/) lists the signs that need one.

### Any tape will do

Duct tape and packing tape block air and are hard on skin. 7 The studies used silicone tape made for skin. 2 5

### Tape is safe because it is natural

Closing your mouth while your nose is blocked can raise breathing events by about 13.8 an hour. 4 That can be enough to move a person up a whole level of apnea.

We think tape has one good use today, as a helper for a mouth breather on a nose mask CPAP, with a doctor watching the numbers. Get your score first, keep the CPAP and let the machine report tell you if tape is working.
